"Tweaked", "Cracked", and "Loaded": A Profile of the Addicted Dental Patient

with Dr. Ronni Brown

Identify the drugs patients are most likely to abuse. Discover the “oral” clues of substance abuse. Learn how not to fall prey to patients who are “drug seeking.

With methamphetamine being the second most widely abused drug in the world, it is likely that you are
treating patients who use methamphetamine and have “meth mouth”; teeth that are rotted,
blackened, and broken. Many clinicians are not aware of the signs and symptoms of
methamphetamine use, or the medical, legal, and ethical issues associated with treating the addicted
patient. Being aware of patients’ substance abuse histories is the first step towards patient and
practice safety.

Dr. Brown earned BS, DDS and MPH degrees from UCLA and received specialty training in dental public health at UCSF. She is a member of the American Dental Association, National Dental Association, California Dental Association, American Public Health Association, American Association of Public Health Dentistry and the Forensic Expert Witness Association. She has been recognized as a ‘champion’ in evidence-based dentistry by the American Dental Association.  Her research on “meth mouth” has garnered national interest and has been published in the Journal of the California Dental Association (2013). In addition to her clinical practice, Dr. Brown is a consultant and expert witness for the Dental Board of California
